Shooting photos has never been easier.
I’ve seen so much incredible technological progress in my lifetime. The first photos I ever took for myself were on disposable cameras my parents would buy for me whenever I’d go somewhere on my own, like a school field trip or a week at summer camp. My father had a passion for photo albums, and so it fell to me to capture family memories when he wouldn’t be there to do so. However, it became clear that I’d need an upgrade once Dad started seeing fewer candids and more landscapes come back from the supermarket photo lab. In 2004 I got my first digital camera, a Canon PowerShot A75, and I’ve been shooting photos everywhere I went ever since.
These days we have incredibly powerful cameras in our pockets at all times, making passion for photography all the more approachable to people the world over. Gone are the days of lamenting a lack of a camera during a family gathering or a particularly beautiful sunset, and that’s a wonderful thing! While I do regret the reduced use of my trusty DSLR, I still make a point to get out and shoot with it a couple times a year. At the end of the day, the amount of control you get with manual controls and RAW files remains unparalleled. But hey, who knows where we’ll be in another 20 years?
But no matter whether you’re using a smartphone, a full-frame mirrorless, or a disposable novelty, an photographer’s eye for composition, timing, and context will always shine through. Below are some my favorite photos taken over the years. See something you like? Prints and high-res are available by request.
