It’s all by design?

I wouldn’t say that graphic design is my strong suit. If you gave me a choice between designing a logo and shooting a photo, I’d shoot the photo every time. Or animate, or composite, or any of those other categories you passed to get to this one. Really the only task I’d pick graphic design over is drawing…don’t ask me to draw. If you do, we’re both going home disappointed.

All that said, you don’t get this far as a creative without cutting your teeth on some graphic design work. After all, design is at the core of every one of my other preferred categories anyway. Composition, set design, lighting, angles, pace, timing, direction, vision…it’s in all of them. And mograph? That’s just graphic design at 30 frames per second! It all comes back to design. Thoughtful intent that conveys what you want to convey to an audience. That’s design!

So am I good designer? Here’s a sampling of my best graphic design over the years. You tell me!

Jazzy G Clef

A fun little design I whipped up while I was working on a project about jazz music for Maestro Filmworks. It didn’t really fit the theme of the rest of the project, but I was too proud of it to throw it away. One day I’ll animate it.

Patty’s Personalized Training

Logo and print design package for a personal trainer catering to seniors. Simple, elegant, and easy to read were the goals here.

Cube’s Circle

I still think the Nintendo Gamecube controller is among the best controller designs ever made. This minimalist design pays tribute to that awesome piece of hardware.

The Daily Whistle

Logo and icon design package for a social media startup. Client’s goals were to portray the act of a person whistling while also incorporating globe and keyhole imagery. Personally I still prefer the version with the whistling i, but as long as the client is happy, that’s what matters!

Stylized 64

I love a good logo design, and one of my all time favorites will always be the iconic N of the Nintendo 64. One day I was inspired to riff on this idea, and casually uploaded it to Reddit hoping at least one or two other people would enjoy it. Someone that post made it not only to the front page, but the literal top post on the site that day. I still can’t believe that happened.
